We
have had many swimmers and parents approach us with questions about
the addition of weight lifting and other cross training activities
to the training that we do in the pool. In general, we
encourage the kids to supplement their training with anything that
will add to their strength and flexibility, as long as we know
about the activities so we can monitor their training appropriately
to avoid injury.
An actual weight lifting
program should only be undertaken by age-appropriate swimmers under
the supervision of a qualified trainer/instructor; however, every
swimmer in our program could benefit from the basic strength they
will gain from the exercise programs outlined at the three free
sites listed below:
1.)
http://www.hundredpushups.com
2.)
http://www.twohundredsitups.com
3.)
http://www.twohundredsquats.com
Participation in
the programs outlined on these sites does not take a significant
amount of time, and is something that almost every member of your
family could participate in, and benefit from. We want all
the swimmers to check these sites out and try the examples and
initial tests for each of the exercises. We will check
with everyone Thursday to chart the results of their initial
tests.
